HBOT works by having a person breathe oxygen while inside a pressurized chamber. The increased pressure allows substantially more oxygen to dissolve into the blood plasma, increasing oxygen availability to tissues beyond what can be achieved through normal breathing.
This increased oxygen availability is one of the fundamental mechanisms behind HBOT's established medical applications, particularly when tissue oxygenation is compromised.
What this means: HBOT isn't simply “breathing more oxygen.” The combination of oxygen concentration and increased atmospheric pressure changes how oxygen is transported throughout the body.

HBOT & Exercise Recovery: What Does the Research Say?
“Recent research suggests hyperbaric oxygen therapy may help accelerate recovery from exercise-induced muscle injury—but its effects on muscle soreness are less consistent.”
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 10 randomized controlled studies involving 299 participants and found that HBOT significantly accelerated recovery from exercise-induced muscle injury. The benefits were observed in both college students and elite athletes.
However, the researchers found that HBOT did not produce a significant overall reduction in exercise-induced muscle soreness, highlighting an important distinction between recovering from muscle damage and simply feeling less sore. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
What this means: The current research is promising for physical recovery, but HBOT shouldn't be marketed as a guaranteed way to eliminate post-workout soreness.

HBOT & Tissue Healing
“One of the most established applications of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is supporting the healing of certain difficult or compromised tissues.”
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of 31 randomized controlled trials found that oxygen-based therapies—including HBOT—improved several short-term measures of healing in people with chronic wounds. The analysis found better short-term wound healing, greater reductions in ulcer size, shorter healing time, and lower amputation rates compared with control treatments. What this means: Increasing oxygen availability to compromised tissue is an important therapeutic application of HBOT. The strongest evidence is in specific medical conditions and difficult-to-heal wounds, rather than assuming the same effects occur in every healthy person.
